A few years ago we were away from home and I offered to prepare Thanksgiving dinner for my family. I thought, “This will be fun.” I will do the turkey and some sides and everyone else can bring a dish. It did not go quite as planned for a couple of reasons. I was on vacation and did not really want to lose a day in the kitchen, and it turns out my family did not want to make a single dish either! So I decided to try a “ready to go” Thanksgiving. I was extraordinarily skeptical of the pre-made food options, and I waffled in the store multiple times. I must of said, “I’ll just make the potatoes” a dozen times and “no way this is going to taste good!” two dozen more!
How did it turn out…one of the best Thanksgivings ever! We cooked the turkey, reheated the sides, plated them in beautiful serving dishes and welcomed our family into our rental home. Totally stress free and the food measured up too!

We are very excited to introduce the Inn Kitchen + Bar. The Squam Lake Inn cafe has been very popular dining spot for the past seven years–but we felt it was time to shake it up! I am sure that this is not a surprise to our customers who have been with us from the start! We have made a few changes around here in the nine years that we have called the Squam Lake Inn home. Here is a peek of what we have going on in the dining room this month:
- New Name Branding
- New Menu Concept and Format (All your favorites are still available!)
- Cool Community Table (We brought some CA back to NH with us!)
- New Hours–Ask your server for a postcard that details the restaurant hours!
- Updated Decor + Lighting

We are looking forward to the season and are very excited to implement and execute our vision. The Inn Kitchen + Bar will open for the 2012 season on, Wednesday, May 9. Six rooms are receiving bathroom upgrades this month. We have completed stripping the bathrooms of the sinks, toilets, showers and light fixtures. It has been a group effort, Diane & I are the designated shower demolition team, Nick does the heavy lifting, Molly and Cindy prepare the rooms for painting! We were hoping to find some relics behind the walls–no luck!
The bathrooms will be upgraded with Kohler fixtures including our favorite comfort height toilet! We are excited to see the finished bathrooms , the project will be completed by April 1st. For those of you that are familiar with the inn you may be asking yourself, “Why only the upstairs rooms, what about those lovely downstairs rooms with the big bathrooms?” Well, we got plans for those rooms slated for next off season. That will be a project to keep your on eye on! You may even want to advance book the room-it will be special! Rae
Are you like us and wonder where the time flies too? We are a month into 2012 and I have barely declared my resolutions! During the summer and fall I get asked daily, “what do you do when the Inn is closed?”. I always answer that we do improvements, planning, marketing and, of course, take a vacation.
So far in 2012, I can check off vacation! We have had a wonderful stay in sunny Southern California visiting our friends and family. For those of you who don’t know, we moved to NH from Orange County, California 9 years ago. It has been great to be back. We have spent our time well scouring stores and restaurants for ideas! We pour over menus and wine lists looking for sparks of inspiration. I know, its a tough job but…
We also have set our 10 goals for the Inn this year. Each of them will improve the Squam Lake Inn and enhance your stay! The details and lists are long. What we want you to know is that we spend this valuable off season planning for a better than ever upcoming season at the S.L.I.! Cindy
