The Loon is often remembered by Katherine Hepburn’s affectionate imitation in the On Golden Pond movie. The loons on Squam return each year from the Maine coast to nest and their babies’ hatch around the first of July. Boat tours will point out nesting spots and other interesting facts.
The Loon Center in nearby Moultonborough provides an indepth look at these beautiful birds at their visitor’s center. They can be seen and heard at the inn as well, often flying overhead in the early morning and at dusk to return to their nest on Little Squam Lake. Click here to hear the Loon call.
